What’s a bonded title?
A bonded title is an insurance document we pay for which protects the DMV from liability in case the actual titled owner comes forward.
The bond company will pay out the value of the bond to a person that can prove ownership of the vessel, then the bond company turns to our customer to pay them back for the value of the bond (although we’ve never seen it happen before).
The bond value is based on the purchase price or NADA clean retail value, whichever is higher.
That’s why our price is different based on the vessel’s value.
After 3 years, the “bonded” branding will be removed from the title and your title will be considered “clean.”

“How can I get an out-of-state title and registration without being a resident?”
Simple.
We set up a Montana LLC1 so you can meet their residency requirements. Then, we title your vessel under your LLC with a Montana title.
And you won’t have to pay any taxes or file a tax return on your LLC as it will be classified as an asset-holding LLC!
Once you receive the out-of-state proof of ownership from us, you should have no problem transferring it to your state.
We cannot guarantee that it will transfer though, but in most cases, it will. It's best to check with your local DMV to see what they would require for an out-of-state title transfer.

Montana requires that you be a resident of Montana to register your vessel there.
But there’s a way around this…
A Montana LLC.
We open a Montana LLC for you (Dirt Legal will be the registered agent), and since it has a Montana address, you’ll be able to register all your vehicles or vessels under that LLC (which you own).

You can still sell your vessel while it has a bonded title, although you'll need to disclose to any potential buyers that the vessel has a bonded title. The person who purchased the bonded title will remain responsible for the surety bond until the title becomes clear.
To determine if you can transfer the title to your state, you will need to check with your local DMV to see the requirements, but in most cases it can be transferred.

You’ll have to get your vessel insured before you can take it out on the water, but we won’t need proof to register it. To insure your vessel, you’ll want a policy from your state, and you will simply add the LLC as an additional interest for no extra cost.
